Q. Will a heat pump rid my house of condensation?
A. In short, the answer is no. However, depending on the cause and extent of the problem, a heat pump may help to reduce it. The causes for any condensation must always be investigated fully to ensure there are no major leaks or external water sources which are directly contributing to the problem. Once the cause of the condensation is fixed, a heat pump will assist in drying out your house. Heat pumps are the driest form of heating you can install in that they do not introduce any moisture into your home/office. They provide good air flow and a dry, even temperature throughout.

Q. Is a heat pump the same as a ventilation system?
A. No. A heat pump system uses refrigeration principles to shift relatively large amounts of heat in or out of your home to warm or cool it. A domestic ventilation system shifts warm, dry air from the ceiling space into the living space, and is designed to reduce condensation.

Q. How do I operate the system?
A. By an infrared remote controller which controls all features of on/ off, temperature, fan speeds and timer. Heat Pumps can be programmed to turn on when you are away from home or overnight ensuring a warm or cool room on your return.

Q. Do Heat Pumps need maintenance?
A. Heat pump systems, like cars, are mechanical in nature and need to be maintained regularly to ensure they are kept clean and hygenic so they operate as efficiently as possible. All leading manufacturers recommend that their systems are maintained on a regular basis by a trained maintenance technician.

Air filters in the indoor units should be rinsed under cold/warm water and air dried. This is easily done by the owner and should be undertaken every 3 months.

Q. What size will I need for my home?
A. Every home is as individual as its owner. The key to selecting the right Heat Pump for your home is;
- An accurate estimation of your heating and cooling requirements,
- Correct sizing of the heat pump units,
- Location of the units within the home.

Q. What factors will affect the size of heat pump?
A. The amount of heating needed will depend on the heat loss through walls, windows and roofs. To minimise this loss, good insulation is recommended. By insulating first, the size of Heat Pump selected will be generally smaller and therefore cheaper to run. Northern aspect of the home is an important factor as north facing rooms are generally warmer and need less heating.

Q. Do heat pumps take up a lot of room?
A. No, they are designed to be unobtrusive in their size, neutral decor and low noise levels. There are also different types of Heat Pumps, from through-the-wall packaged units to different varieties of split systems including the ducted split system which can be hidden in the ceiling.

Q. How much will it cost to buy and install a heat pump?
A. Because each home is unique, the installed cost of a Heat Pump is different for each home and will depend on the size and type of Heat Pump. Examples of cost. For a Hi Wall single system suitable for a small area, Bedroom etc prices range from $2,500 for a 3kW Hi Wall. The larger single split systems suitable for Open Plan Living areas, Rumpus rooms, open spaces range in price for 5kW - 9kW systems between $3,400 and $5,000 including GST and installation.

Q. How much does it cost to run a heat pump?
A. This depends on the amount of heating required. Assume 6Kw of heating is needed; electric heating is normally 100% efficient, so for 6Kw of heating you pay for 6Kw of electric energy. Heat pumps transfer two to three times more heat, meaning efficiencies of 200-300 %. In other words to produce a 6kW conventional Heat Pumps would only require about 2kW of electrical energy. Inverter type Heat Pumps are even more efficient, being closer to 400% efficient.

Q. How can a heat pump be cheaper to run when it has more moving parts?
A. A Heat Pump uses electricity to 'transfer' heat. Electric heaters 'convert' electric energy to heat energy and are thereby limited by the amount of electricity used. A Heat Pump has no such limitation and can transfer two to three times the heat from outside air than can be 'converted' from the electricity it uses.

Q. Do they cause stuffiness?
A. No, unlike fires and glowing electrical elements, Heat Pumps do not burn oxygen.

Q. Are heat pumps noisy?
A. No, they are generally not noisy. The source of noise in a typical Heat Pump is air impinging on the grille as it is forced out of the unit. Air noise is marginally higher than ambient background noise and is usually not distracting.

Q. Are heat pumps reliable?
A. Yes, Heat Pumps are reliable. They use the same process as a home refrigerator and have the same level of dependability and life expectancy.

Q. Are they difficult to repair and service?
A. No. Provided the service person is experienced and qualfied repairing or servicing Heat Pumps is as straightforward as repairing a fridge or freezer.

Q. How long does it take to install a heat pump?
A. Depending on site conditions i.e. accessability etc, it usually takes approximately 6 hours to install a back to back system.
